King Gizz Means Bizz: A Preview of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard at Neumos

Talk about a tongue twister, am I right? I’ve been sitting on the edge of my chair ever since hearing that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard was coming to this city. And now, the time I’ve been waiting for is just a couple days away. This 7-piece garage rock outfit will be serving up some brain-frying tunes. Hailing all the way from Melbourne, Australia, KGLW is known for their vibrant, experimental rhythms. While their lyrics tend to be curt and simple, their musicality shines through with textured layers of intricate beats. Their upcoming show at Neumos has been sold out for quite some time now, but those lucky folks who grabbed those tickets will be in for one mind-boggling treat.

Having formed in 2011, this group has already released six full-length albums. Just last year, they announced that 2017 will be a big year for them, as they are planning to release brand new records within the year. How many records, you might as? Not one, not three, but five. Five records. They already released album one of five in February, called Flying Microtonal Banana, which I’ve been blasting nonstop. This new album features songs like “Nuclear Fusion” and my personal favorite, “Rattlesnake.” It’ll be exciting to be one of the newer crowds that gets to hear a bunch of these songs live.

Their last album, Nonagon Infinity, is unlike many albums of this time, as it’s an infinitely looping album. Each song seamlessly bleeds into the next, creating a beautiful loop of psych-rock, heavy-hitting tunes. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll play some of these songs just as they’re ordered on the album, as I’m sure witnessing this performance live will be an experience unlike any other.

Opening for KGLW will be slack-prog band, ORB. Their songs mix classic psychedelic rock influences from the ‘60s with heavy grunge rock from the ‘90s. Their sound is somewhat similar to KGLW, especially with their emphasis on heavy, complex rhythms. The pairing of these two bands will prove to be quite a match made in heaven, that’s for sure.

Seattle will be show 11 of the 18 on King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s spring North American tour.

Catch King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s sold out show at Neumos with special guest, ORB, on Sunday, April 9th at 8:00 p.m. This show is 21+. Find more info here.
