[SweetSexySavage album cover]
Kehlani Parrish just celebrated her 22nd birthday on Monday, April 24th, and on Wednesday she will be embarking on her first world tour, effectively making me feel like a pretty s****y twenty-something. However, I will be attending her Seattle stop on the Sweet Sexy Savage tour this upcoming Saturday, April 29th, which will make me feel like I’m living life to the fullest for about an hour and a half.
Kehlani broke onto the scene in 2014 with her debut mixtapes and features on fellow Bay Area rapper G-Eazy’s tracks (she got Chance the Rapper on her 2015 mixtape, You Should Be Here, as well). Since then, she’s worked with names like Zayn and Kahlid, and has even been featured on the Suicide Squad soundtrack.
The Oakland-based R&B singer released her first studio album, SweetSexySavage, in January, and has since skyrocketed to notoriety for fully embodying the album name. Kehlani’s songs are sensual and saccharine—she’s nailed the perfect mix of allure, charm and risqué.
I also adore Kehlani for her perseverance and dedication to her craft. She went through the ringer when she was publicly accused of cheating on her boyfriend with PARTYNEXTDOOR last year, which led to Kehlani attempting suicide. Since the attempt, she’s become a mental health advocate, and is upfront about navigating the darker parts of life, which makes her so strong and genuine to me.
Also joining Kehlani on Saturday will be Ella Mai, Jahkoy, and Noodles, so if you’re unfamiliar with any of them, you have until Saturday, April 29th to get acquainted before catching them at Showbox SoDo. Tickets are still available here, but grab ‘em soon—they’re selling quickly.
